This Subject deals with the Basic & Fundamental Principles of Siddha system of medicine. It is based upon the 96 basic concepts called ’96 Thathuvangal’, with a detailed description of the Philosophical knowledge gifted by Siddhars, the Spiritual Scientists. The Department at Sri Sairam Siddha Medical College & Research Centre, provides an in-depth knowledge right from the History of the Universe & evolution of the human race, the History of Tamil Nadu and of Siddhars, Scientific changes with which the world revolves & the physical and psychological discipline to triumph these changes.

Tamil language as a subject is mandatory for the students who have not studied Tamil as their major language in their 10th or 12th standard

The main aim of the subject ‘Communicative English’ is to develop the communicative skills of the learners in Listening, Speaking, Writing and Reading. They are also taught grammar so that they use grammatically correct sentences while speaking and writing and thus become an effective and an efficient communicators in English

Udal Thathuvam (Physiology)

Udal Thathuvam (Physiology) is the fascinating branch of science which deals with the functioning of living systems in a human body. The Department of Human physiology in Siddha system of medicine is taught both as Siddha Physiology and also as Modern Physiology to impart both the ancient and modern way of understanding the physiology of human body. The efficient staff members of the department teach how organisms, organ systems, organs, cells and in turn bio-molecules carry out their physical & chemical functions in a living system. The physiology laboratory is well built and fully equipped with microscopes and other equipment’s in order to practically train the students about the basics and diagnosis of diseases through the knowledge of human physiology.

Udal vediyal (Biochemistry)

Biochemistry is the science concerned with the chemical basis of life dealing with the structure, properties and chemical reactions of living systems. It is related to human health and diseases which focuses on the methodology and interpretation of clinical tests in support of diagnosis and treatment. We, in Biochemistry, teach the students about interrelating the metabolic reactions of Carbohydrate, Lipid, Protein, Enzymes, Hormones, Nucleic acids, vitamins and Minerals to gain knowledge on the current applications and also to understand health and diseases. The scope is achieved with an aid of an audio visual smart classes, good infrastructure and well equipped laboratory which paves the way for hands on training and so on leading for a road to research in life sciences.

Department of Udal Koorugal (Anatomy)

Udal Koorugal (Anatomy) is the study of form, ‘Anatomy’ meaning ‘to dissect’. This branch of Science deals with the structure of the human body and it is studied in the different dimensional forms like Gross, Regional, Microscopic, Clinical & Surgical Anatomy. The Department of Anatomy has well facilitated Dissection Hall and Anatomy Museum. Our Anatomy laboratory comprises of Cadavers with Dissecting Room, resources such as normal and pathological (abnormal) Specimens, skeletons, sets of bones, soft parts and models. Our Lecture room is equipped with LCD projector and microscopes for histology studies and the Dissection of human body is also done in our department.

Marunthiyal

Gunapadam – plays a vital role in our Siddha system. It is one of the major departments of Siddha. This subject includes Mooligai, Thathu and Jeeva vaguppu. This subject deals with the detailed study about many herbs and their descriptions, their therapeutic actions and their identification. The department has separate class and laboratory for teaching and research programs. Instruments, chemicals, glasswares and other facilities, such as furniture and the laboratory are well developed. Minerals and Animal origin drugs and their usages on research are taught to students and they are also trained on the history, properties, and physiological effects, mechanism of action, absorption, metabolism, excretion and uses of each and every drug mentioned in the Siddha text. In addition we have trained them on purification and various different preparation methods of siddha medicine. We have well equipped museum of raw drugs which enhances the knowledge of Identification purposes and models of Instruments also. Gunapadam department has a pharmacy, pharmaceutical laboratory with machineries in order to train the student in making new and rare preparation of medicine by guidelines to standard siddha system. We also guide the students to start a medicine production unit and visit to some siddha medicine industry to gain experiences from the unit.

MaruthuvaThavaraiyal (Medicinal Botany)

Medicinal Botany (Maruthuva Thavaraiyal) is the science of the plant kingdom, It is unique from others because our main focus is teaching students about the medicinal plants and their environment at local, regional levels. The subject deals with the History and Importance of Flowering and non-flowering plants as well as in Plant biology, Plant Anatomy, Ecology and Plant Tissue Culture as well as Plant Pharmacology. The highly qualified staff under the department provides both theoretical and practical knowledge of Plant Taxonomy, Morphology, Anatomy, Medicinal uses and the Identification of plants. The department has separate class rooms and laboratory facilities for teaching and research programs.

The department is maintaining a beautiful Botanical Garden in the heart of college campus which is a living museum of more than 600 different and rare medicinal plants. The department is maintaining a herbarium which contains extensive collection of more than 200 medicinal plants found naturally in Western Ghats, Tamil Nadu. Botanical specimens including whole plants, fruits and seeds are preserved in the laboratory. Instruments, chemicals, specimen, slides and other facilities such as furnishing the laboratories are well equipped. The Department of Medicinal Botany organizes periodical Seminars & Conferences (‘Sai Med Plant’) with the guest lecturers of eminent Scientists in order to encourage the students to undertake research along with their academic curriculum. Our mission is to cultivate the potential students to human society to serve the people by siddha medicine way to facilitate their life.


Gunapadam - Marunthakaviyal (Pharmaceuticals)

Siddha system of medicine has its unique method of pharmaceutical science. Basically medicines are divided into internal medicine and external medicine which has 32 types in each respectively. Siddhar theraiyar says “Vaer Paru Thazhai Paru Minjinakkal Parpam Chenduram Paru” that is, medicines prepared from Herbs, Metals, Minerals, herbomineral preparations etc. There are certain techniques used in this system namely Calcination, Sublimation, Distillation, Dissolution, Fusion, Separation, Purification, Extraction, Cupellation for medicine preparation. Adjuvants play a vital role in Siddha system. All these kinds of Medicine preparations are taught to the students with hands on training and experiences.

Noinaadal

Noi Nadal & Noi Muthal Naadal (Pathology) is the scientific study of the Nature of diseases, its causes, processes, development and consequences. The Department provides a deep theoretical knowledge on Pathology in two major forms – General Pathology and Systemic Pathology. The practical knowledge with patient’s blood, urine and other samples are conducted to teach the students the proper ways of diagnosing a disease, collectively called Clinical Pathology. Our Department has a Pathology laboratory and samples from Peripheral Camps are collected and used in this laboratory for teaching Siddha Diagnostic methods. The laboratory is equipped with microscopes, specimens and models to provide practical training to the students in Histopathology, Hematology, and Cytology and Clinical pathology.

Nunnuyirial

Nunnuyiriyal (Microbiology), the most interesting subject of a completely different world of organisms that are invisible to naked eyes. ‘Microorganisms’ as they are known, includes Bacteria, viruses, fungi, algae and the subject deals in detail about the Morphology of the organisms, their physiological nature, Antigens with which they cause diseases, Pathogenicity of the organisms, clinical symptoms that it causes and the classical methods and modern techniques involved in diagnosing them. Besides causing diseases, Microorganisms are also beneficial to our daily life which is also highlighted in the subject.
Apart from the above, the Immune system of our human body and the way it tackles the infections are also taught to the students which make them understand the causes for various diseases and the way human body handles them. Microbiology laboratory is fully furnished with instruments like Autoclave, Hot Air oven, Laminar air flow, Microscopes and reagents for every student to explore themselves on this new kingdom of living beings.

Sattam Saarntha Maruthuvamum Nanju Maruthuvamum (Forensic medicine and Toxicology)

The applied use of medical knowledge or practice, especially pathology, to the purposes of the law, as in determining the cause of death also called medical jurisprudence in legal medicine. And toxicology is a branch of biology, chemistry, and medicine concerned with the study of the adverse effects of herbs, Minerals, Metals, chemicals and Animals. It is the study of symptoms, mechanisms, treatments and detection of poisoning, especially the poisoning of people. The department faculties conduct quiz programs, guest lecture programs, seminar and CME programs for students to get detail knowledge. In our college we have a well organized museum for the subject.

Department of Sool and Magalir Maruthuvam (Obstetrics and Gynaecology)

Department of Sool Magalir Maruthuvam deals with the subjects regarding Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The well experienced staff provides in depth knowledge to the students on both siddha and modern aspects. Power point presentation and video classes are conducted for the students to get detailed visual understanding about the subject. The department faculties conduct quiz programs, guest lecture programs, seminar and CME programs for students to get detail knowledge about various diseases. Clinical training classes are conducted for the students regarding female diseases like infertility, amenorrhoea, dysmenorrhoea, menorrhagia, uterine prolapse, fibroid uterus, anaemia and also antenatal care. Students are educated about the external therapies like Pattikattal in In patient department. The department make arrangement for free medical camps in the surrounding villages to provide health education and siddha treatment to the needy people. Students participate in medical camps to acquire clinical knowledge and social awareness. The faculty members are guiding and motivating the students to participate and present research papers in seminar, conference and workshop.

Department of Maruthuvam (Medicine)

The subject deals with the causes, signs and symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of the diseases which make clear, the treatment methodologies both Internal and external. The experienced staff provides in depth knowledge to the students on both Siddha aspect and Modern aspect. Power point presentation and video classes are conducted for the students to get detailed visual understanding about the subject. The Department also boasts of arranging free Medical Camps in the surrounding villages to provide Health Education and Medical Aid to the public.

Department of Aruvai Maruthuvam (Surgery)

The subject deals with the causes, signs and symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of the diseases which needs surgical intervention. The well experienced staffs of the department of Aruvai maruthuvam provides in depth knowledge to the students on sathirayuthangal ( Siddha surgical instruments) and minor surgical procedures like Attai Vidal ( leech therapy) , Suttigai (cauterization), Vedhu (steam therapy), Pugai ( fumigation ), orttadam, karanool etc. The subject also includes eye, ear, nose and dental diseases. Practical training includes clinical practices, given to students in OP and IP. Our department also conducts free medical camps (every month), CME, Workshop and field trips related to this subject.

Department of Kuzhanthai Maruthuvam (Peadiatrics)

Pediatrics is the study of a child from the very conception throughout childhood including adolescence. Prevention being the primary tool for health maintenance, the role of Siddha in infants and children is really important. Siddha medicine enhances the body’s overall natural resistance to the disease causing agent, rather than directly neutralizing the agent itself. And in addition to all these, Siddha medicines are safe, gentle and palatable.
Academics:
Syllabus of this subject comprises both traditional Siddha system and recent advances in Modern paediatrics. Smart class facilities are available which are very useful for conducting power point presentation and video classes. Regular CMEs are being conducted with lectures given by experts of the field.

Department of Varmam, Sirappumaruthuvam (Varmam and Special Medicine)

Department of varmam pura maruthuvam and sirappu Maruthuvam deals with the subjects regarding Kayakarpam (Rejuvanation), Pranayamam, Yoga, kirigai (psychiatric diseases), Varmam, Enbu murivu (Orthopaedics). Power point presentation and video classes are conducted for the students to get detailed visual understanding about the subject. The department faculties conduct Hands on training programmes quiz programmes, guest lecture programmes, seminar and for students to get detail knowledge about various diseases. Clinical training classes are conducted for the students regarding, orthopedic diseases, Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis, lumbar spondylosis cervical spondylosis, Sciatica and also Fractures, and also yogasanam, pranayamam. The department makes arrangement for free medical camps periodically in the surrounding villages to provide health education and siddha treatment to the needy people. Students participate in medical camps and gain clinical knowledge and also to create social awareness.

Preventive and Community medicine mainly focuses on the health of individuals in a group of population or defined social group. Its primary aim is to protect, promote and maintain the health and well-being of the society. It is also aimed to create awareness to prevent from disease, damage and death. While clinical specialties look after individual patient, our subject has to think and act in terms of whole community. The scope of medicine has expanded during the last few decades to include not only health problems of individuals, but those of communities as well.

Our Department of education delivers a comprehensive education and training portfolio, including undergraduate health, primary health care, desire for lifelong learning, evidence-based practice, interdisciplinary team work, and professional and ethical behavior in practice in order to improve and sustain the health of the population.

Research Methodology and Medical Biostatistics

Research methodology and Medical statistics syllabus also covers the ICH vision, to ensure that safe, effective, and high quality medicines are developed and registered in the most resource-efficient manner. A clinical trial is a type of research that studies a test or treatment given to people. Clinical trials, study how safe and helpful tests and treatments are. When found to be safe and helpful, they may become tomorrow’s standard of care.
