Gunapadam – Maruthuvathavaraviyal & Marunthiyal organized one day field trip on “Traditional knowledge of medicinal plants from Ethnic Communities in Irular Tribes in Thandarai Village

The department of Gunapadam – Maruthuvathavaraviyal & Marunthiyal organized one day field trip on “Traditional knowledge of medicinal plants from Ethnic Communities in Irular Tribes in Thandarai Village, Chengalpattu Forest Division on 09.02.2024. Forty-nine students and three faculties visited Irula Tribal Welfare Association Medicinal Plants Garden and Medicinal plant products processing Units. The Second Profession BSMS students interacted with Tribal Head Mr. K.Sigamani and gained ethnobotanical information. In this field visit students documented a total of 125 different medicinal plants, their vernacular names, and their uses as crude drugs in various diseases. The medicinal plant garden visit was a very excellent opportunity to observe the different medicinal plant species which are generally not observed. The faculty members also explained the importance of herbal gardens in preserving traditional knowledge related to medicinal plants and promoting sustainable practices in healthcare.
